In six hours Kentucky received 9 inches of rain causing the North Fork Kentucky River to rise 20 feet in 10 hours topping its previous record in 1939 by 6 feet. Many of its tributaries became raging torrents. The flash flooding was so extreme the National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings for six counties and caused over 100 people to be rescued by helicopter. It has been determined that water moving at 6 mph can exert the same pressure as a EF5 tornado with winds in excess of 200 mph. This caused the death of at least 39 people. We stayed at the First Baptist Church in Hazard, KY and Pastor Tim and his team provided a great place to stay, fed us very well and passed on jobs that needed to be done in the surrounding area. Gideon Rescue Company arrived first with 12 people on July 29 with most leaving on August 3, 2Serve leadership arrived Monday, August 1 staying through the 14th, the Ky/Tn Conference team arrived on Wednesday, August 3 and stayed through the 17th. Beacon Academy sent 10, Fletcher Academy sent 27 and Madison Academy sent 20 making a total of 108 people responding over the 19 days our groups helped with a high of 40 people at one time. GRC helped with search & rescue by providing boats and search dogs with our other responders mucking out over 20 homes, 3 churches and spent 4 days mucking out a private Christian school. In addition we assisted at two PODs (Point of Distribution) for food, water, tarps and other necessities. We prayed with the survivors we served and left them a book or tract that gave them hope of something better when Jesus comes.
